How it works
- Enter your yearly income. Use your chargeable income: your gross pay, minus any allowed deductions.
- Choose if you are a resident. Most people who live and work in Malta are tax residents. Non-residents use different rates.
- Choose your tax status. Your status (single, married or parent) decides the size of each tax band.
- Add other income (optional). Part-time work can be taxed at a flat 10% (up to €10,000 a year). Rental income can be taxed at a flat 15% on the gross rent.
- See your tax. The table shows how much of your income falls in each band, and the tax for each band.
Malta has progressive tax: each rate only applies to the part of your income inside that band. A pay rise never makes your net income go down.
Frequently asked questions
What are the income tax rates in Malta for 2026?
For a single person, the first €12,000 is tax-free. Income from €12,001 to €16,000 is taxed at 15%, from €16,001 to €60,000 at 25%, and above €60,000 at 35%. Married and parent rates have bigger tax-free bands.
What changed in 2026?
From 2026 there are four new rate tables for families. Married couples and parents with one child, or with two or more children, get larger tax-free and lower bands. You need to meet the conditions and give your employer a new FS4 form.
Who is a tax resident in Malta?
Usually, you are a tax resident if you live in Malta and plan to stay, or if you spend more than 183 days a year in Malta. If you are not sure, ask a tax adviser or the Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA).
What is the 10% part-time tax rate?
Income from a part-time job can be taxed at a flat 10%, on up to €10,000 a year. You must also have a full-time job, or meet other conditions. You can choose normal rates instead if this is better for you.
How is rental income taxed?
If you rent out property in Malta, you can choose to pay a flat 15% tax on the gross rent. Otherwise the rent is added to your other income and taxed at normal rates.
When do I file my tax return?
Employees usually pay tax every month through their payslip (the FSS system). Most employees with simple income do not need to file a return. If you have other income, the tax return is normally due by 30 June of the following year.
