Gyms & Fitness Clubs

Your guide to staying active in Malta. Explore commercial chains, boutique fitness studios, CrossFit boxes, and free outdoor gyms.

Fitness Culture in Malta

Malta has a vibrant and rapidly growing fitness culture, heavily fueled by its young expat population and the year-round Mediterranean climate. Whether you are into heavy weightlifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga, or just running along the promenade, you will find excellent facilities to match your routine.

Because the island is small and densely populated, gyms in central areas (like Sliema and St. Julian's) can get very busy during peak hours (5:30 PM to 7:30 PM). To combat this, many chains now offer 24/7 access via biometric scanners or key fobs.

Major Commercial Gyms

For standard weightlifting, cardio equipment, and group classes, these are the most popular large-scale gym facilities on the island:

Fort Fitness

Location: Sliema (Tigné Point) & Mrieħel

One of the most popular premium gyms for expats. It features a massive indoor track, a boxing ring, a huge array of free weights, and dozens of classes weekly. Very modern equipment and excellent changing facilities.

Cynergi Health and Fitness

Location: St. Julian's (Paceville)

Located right next to the Eden Cinemas, Cynergi is a premium health club. A membership often includes access to squash courts, an indoor pool, saunas, and Turkish baths. It is very popular with corporate workers in the area.

24/7 Fitness Club

Locations: Ta' Qali, San Ġwann, Mellieħa, Żebbuġ, St. Paul's Bay

The best option for flexibility and budget. Your membership gives you fingerprint access to all their locations across the island 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Challenger Fitness Centre

Locations: Paceville, Qormi, Valletta, Cottonera

A highly affordable chain with a slightly more "old-school bodybuilding" vibe, though they have recently modernized their cardio equipment. Great for those focused purely on lifting weights.

Boutique Studios & CrossFit

If you prefer a tight-knit community, specialized coaching, or class-based workouts, Malta has seen a massive surge in boutique fitness offerings.

  • CrossFit: The functional fitness community is huge here. CrossFit F15 (Msida) and CrossFit 356 (Lija) are excellent, fully equipped "boxes" with highly qualified coaches, strong expat communities, and daily WODs (Workouts of the Day).
  • HIIT & Functional Training: Studios like Freemyme (Sliema) focus on high-energy, class-based functional training, yoga, and pilates, offering a premium, personalized aesthetic compared to standard commercial gyms.
  • Yoga and Pilates: You will find dozens of dedicated yoga studios scattered across the island. During the spring and summer, it is incredibly common for yoga instructors to host sunrise or sunset pop-up classes on the beaches or clifftops.

Free Outdoor Gyms & Calisthenics

Why pay for a gym when you have 300 days of sunshine? The Maltese government has invested heavily in public outdoor fitness infrastructure.

  • 🏃‍♂️ Sliema Promenade (Independence Gardens)

This is the heart of Malta's outdoor fitness scene. Right on the seafront, you will find a fully equipped, free calisthenics park with pull-up bars, parallel bars, and dip stations. It is always buzzing with people working out, stretching, or running along the 5km promenade that stretches from Gżira to St. Julian's.

  • 🌳 Ta' Qali National Park

Located in the center of the island, this massive park features dedicated outdoor gym equipment, running tracks, and wide open green spaces perfect for circuit training or outdoor yoga.

  • 🌊 Salina Park (St. Paul's Bay)

Another beautifully maintained public park featuring free fitness equipment, favored by the large expat community living in the north of the island.

Estimated Costs & Expat Tips

Gym memberships in Malta are generally affordable, but the price depends heavily on the length of the contract you are willing to sign.

  • Standard Commercial Gyms: Expect to pay between €40 and €60 per month. Most gyms offer significant discounts if you pay for 6 or 12 months upfront (bringing the monthly average down to around €30-€40).
  • Premium/Boutique/CrossFit: These specialized gyms or premium health clubs usually cost between €70 and €100+ per month, reflecting the specialized coaching and premium facilities.
  • Day Passes: If you are just visiting or want to try a gym before committing, almost all gyms sell day passes for tourists, usually ranging from €10 to €15 per day.
Expat Financial Tip: Corporate Discounts

Before signing up for a gym, ask your HR department! Almost all major iGaming, financial, and tech companies in Malta have corporate agreements with the big gym chains (especially Cynergi and Fort Fitness) offering their employees discounts of up to 20-30% off the standard public rates.
