Beyond the party scene, Malta boasts a rich calendar of cultural and historical events that take over the streets of its ancient cities.
- Notte Bianca (October): One of the most highly anticipated nights of the year. For one night in October, the capital city of Valletta remains open until the early hours. State palaces, museums, and galleries open their doors for free, while the streets are filled with live music, theatrical performances, and food stalls.
- Malta International Arts Festival (June/July): Organized by Festivals Malta, this multi-week event features a diverse program of theater, dance, music, and visual arts, often utilizing historic sites like the Hagar Qim temples or Fort St. Elmo as stunning performance venues.
- Valletta Film Festival (Summer): Malta's largest cinematic event, screening dozens of international feature films, documentaries, and short films in open-air venues across the capital.
- Delicata Classic Wine Festival (August): Held at the picturesque Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour. Attendees purchase a commemorative glass and enjoy unlimited tastings of local Maltese vintages, accompanied by live entertainment and local food.
Traditional Highlights: Carnival & Fireworks
Two traditional events dominate the local calendar and absolutely should not be missed by anyone living on the island.
Dating back to the rule of the Knights of St. John, Carnival in Malta is a vibrant, five-day explosion of color leading up to Ash Wednesday.
Valletta Carnival: Highly organized and family-friendly, featuring massive, brightly colored, mechanically moving floats, competitive dance troupes, and children in elaborate costumes.
Nadur Carnival (Gozo): The "spontaneous" carnival in Gozo is the polar opposite. It is a massive, chaotic, adult-oriented street party known for grotesque, satirical, and deeply bizarre homemade costumes. It's a surreal experience that draws thousands of young people across the ferry every year.
Fireworks are a serious business in Malta. This festival takes place over several days in late April, leading up to Malta's EU accession anniversary. Top pyrotechnic companies from Malta and around the globe design incredible, musically synchronized aerial displays, usually culminating in a spectacular grand finale over the Grand Harbour in Valletta.
