Moving to a new country is exciting, but the first weeks can feel like a lot. Here are seven things that will make your start in Malta easier.
1. Download the apps before you land
Bolt and Uber are the easiest way to get around, and a ride from the airport to Sliema usually costs between €12 and €15. For food and groceries, use Wolt or Bolt Food. See our Getting Started guide for the full list.
2. Get a personalised bus card
With a personalised Tallinja card, buses are free for residents. Without one, a single trip costs €2. Buses are not always on time, so leave early for important appointments.
3. Start your paperwork early
Your residence card, work permit and tax number all take time. Book appointments as soon as you can, and keep copies of every document. Our Permits and IDs guide explains each step.
4. Know how to see a doctor
Most GPs in Malta hold clinic hours inside local pharmacies. You usually walk in without an appointment and pay about €15–25. In an emergency, call 112. More in our Healthcare guide.
5. Take your time finding a flat
Rent is high in Sliema, St Julian's and Swieqi. Towns like Mosta and Żebbuġ often cost less. Visit a flat before you pay a deposit, and always get a registered contract. Read Renting Properties first.
6. Prepare for the summer heat
From June to September, days reach 30–35°C and nights stay warm. Air conditioning is a must, and humidity can be high all year. Check our weather notes on the home page.
7. Say hello to your neighbours
The Maltese are friendly and helpful once you get to know them. Learn a few words of Maltese, like grazzi (thank you), and join a local festa in summer. See Local Etiquette and Annual Festivals.
