About Malta Expat Guide

A free, independent guide for foreign nationals moving to or living in Malta.

Who we are

Malta Expat Guide is written by an expat who has lived and worked in Malta since 2018. We know what it is like to arrive in a new country and not know where to start: which forms to fill in, which office to visit, or where to find a flat.

We started this website to put the answers in one place, in plain and simple English.

What you will find here

The guide covers the main parts of moving to and living in Malta:

  • Paperwork: permits, ID cards, tax, healthcare and driving licences
  • Housing: renting, buying, mortgages and the Housing Authority
  • Daily life: schools, insurance, internet, food, customs and holidays
  • Free time: beaches, towns, festivals, restaurants and trips to Gozo and Sicily

New to Malta? Start with Getting Started.

Our approach

  • Simple English. Many of our readers do not speak English as a first language, so we keep sentences short and clear.
  • Honest. We share the good and the not-so-good parts of life in Malta.
  • Kept up to date. Rules, prices and fees in Malta change often. We review our guides regularly.

Please note

This website gives general information only. It is not legal, tax or financial advice. Always check important details with the official source, such as Identità, the Commissioner for Revenue or your employer, before you make a decision.
